Can Tho Bridge linked up

Spanning the Hau River and located 3.2 kilometers from the Can Tho ferry terminal, the 2,750 meter-long Can Tho Bridge with four lanes and two 2.75-meter-wide walkways will knock 32 minutes off the travel time compared with using the ferry.

Construction of the USD 300 million crossing began in September 2004 with official developmental assistance from Japan.

Package 1, a 5.4-km access road from Vinh Long, is 96 percent complete, as is Package 2, construction of the bridge itself. Package 3, a 7.7-km access road from Can Tho, is 75 percent complete. One of the many people thrilled with the progress of Can Tho Bridge is Nguyen Trung Thanh, director of Ngoc Sinh Seafood Processing, Export and Import Company based in Vietnam’s southernmost province of Ca Mau.

After the bridge is open to traffic next year, his export shipments will no longer be delayed on their journey to Ho Chi Minh City by having to queue for the ferry, Thanh said ahead of the link-up ceremony.
