City takes actions to cope with impacts of climate change

Nguyen Van Phuoc, deputy director of the city’s environment department, said that at least eight related departments of the city would coordinate their programs for reducing the worsening social and economic impacts resulted from the climate change.

The project focuses on cutting down the greenhouse gas emissions including carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane and chlorofluorocarbon in the years to come. Particularly, the project also sets concrete targets for each department to act for reducing the emission of carbon dioxide, he said.

According to the environment department, related departments this week will have a meeting to have a common stance on the action program.

Under the project, the transport department will be responsible for reducing power consumption for public lighting, limiting the number of private vehicles so as to cut down emitted smoke, reducing and reducing fuel consumption and a cutting down the loss of fresh water to 24% by 2020 compared to some 40% now.

The department of agriculture and rural development will be responsible for reforestation, protection of natural forests, control of flood and high tide, construction of dykes and renovation of the sewage system. Besides, the department of industry and trade will be charged with checking and upgrading the power supply facilities with an aim of reducing the ratio of electrical energy loss from 7% in 2010 down to 6% by 2020.

Particularly, according to the project, the department of natural resources and environment will also carry out a program of appraising all impacts from the sea level rising over social and economic aspects, continuing to perfect the classification of all household wastes by 2020 and hastening the projects of turning waste into power at dumpsites.
