Science and technology key to agricultural restructuring

The conference on scientific ideas for agricultural restructuring associated with new rural development was held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. More than 100 delegates attended at the conference, according to Nguoi Lao Dong.

Chu Ngoc Anh, Minister of Science and Technology, said science and technology contributed from 30%-40% to the growth of agricultural sector by adding more value to agricultural products. Sci-tech not only plays an important role in the sustainable development of the sector but also helps agriculture to adapt to climate change and improve competitiveness in the context of international integration.

Tran Dinh Long, chairman of Vietnam Seedling Association, said scientific research has been mainly dependent on the State’s resources so far, and the application of sci-tech achievements into agricultural production is still facing challenges.

Nguyen Xuan Cuong, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said Vietnam has gained many achievements in agriculture after 30 years of renovation thanks to the significant contribution of science and technology. The country has become the world’s leading rice exporter, and has more than ten products which generate over US$1 billion in export turnover each.

However, the agricultural sector should promote sci-tech applications for the production, mobilize resources for scientific research, and take advantage of international support, Cuong added.

The ministry will map out mechanisms on cooperation between farming enterprises and scientists, which is aimed at further enhancing agricultural restructuring.
