Software companies small, young: survey
Eighty-two percent of the 145 surveyed companies, including 19 with foreign investment, have registered capital less than VND25 billion (US$1.4 million), according to the survey conducted in May and June.
Less than 20 percent of companies were established before 2000, according to the survey. Most of them operate in the fields of website applications, specific solutions for customers, and information technology consultation.
Around 60 percent work in all the fields and 50 percent provide software outsourcing services, it said.
Up to 30 percent of the companies said they plan to offer business processing outsourcing (BPO) services next year.
Contracting out certain business functions to a third-party service provider, BPO has recently been introduced to Vietnam.
VINASA said the survey, expected to be conducted annually, will be the base for them together with international experts, to propose solutions to develop the local software industry and help businesses overcome the global crisis to the government and the ministry of Information and Communications next month.
The survey was released before the 4th World Information Technology Forum which will launch in Hanoi Wednesday (24 Aug). Around 1,500 delegates from different countries, including ICT ministers, academics, experts, and policy makers are expected to attend.
This is the first time the biennial event lasting for three days is held in Asia since it was started in Lithuania six years ago.
