City opens two bridges to traffic
Nguyen Van Cu Bridge across the Ben Nghe Canal connects District 1 with districts 4, 5, and 8. Construction of the bridge started in 2005 and cost VND535 billion. The four-lane bridge is more than 1,200 meters long and 16.5 meters wide.
Chu Y Bridge spans Tau Hu and Doi canals to link Nguyen Bieu Street in District 5 and Hung Phu and Nguyen Thi Tan streets in District 8. It is part of the East-West Highway under construction, so it was upgraded to ensure a sufficient clearance for the road underneath. Chu Y Bridge measures 160 meters in length and 12 meters in width.
The opening of the two major bridges will help reduce traffic congestion in District 8 and shorten the distance between the district and the downtown.
The department and the East-West Highway and Water Environment project management unit also opened a 1.4 kilometer widened section of National Highway 1A and Ong Tranh Bridge to traffic on the same day.
